ABOUT THE CLIENT

A convention and business-events centre in Malaysia, operating in the business events and MICE sector. At the time of the engagement it was preparing for a major capacity expansion, with a ten-person Sales, Business Development and Marketing leadership team responsible for winning and growing the accounts that expansion depends on.

S
SITUATION

A convention and business-events centre in Malaysia was preparing for a major capacity expansion. Its ten-person Sales, Business Development and Marketing leadership team faced rising commercial complexity, tougher client negotiations, and pressure to modernise how it won and grew accounts. Leadership wanted to know whether the team had the adaptability, agility and cohesion to carry the business through its next phase of growth.

I
IMPLICATION

Without a clear read on the team's adaptability, the organisation risked scaling its ambitions on capabilities built for a smaller, slower market, carrying outdated sales habits, unmanaged stress and cultural friction into a far more competitive phase of growth.

A
APPROACH

AQai® Certified Partner Jonathan Low assessed all ten leaders with the AQme® adaptability assessment, then used AQ® to map how the individual profiles combined at a team level. The data surfaced a team stronger at optimising existing workflows than transforming for growth. Lower scores in AQ® Abilities including Mindset, Resilience and Unlearning, coupled with low AQ® Environment scores, showed the team was not ready for the changes ahead.

Jonathan delivered the findings through a two-day programme and one-to-one coaching with every team member, translating the AQ® profile into practical moves: naming high-adaptability change champions, designing learning sprints, and redesigning sales rituals aligned to the expansion strategy.

WHY AQ® WAS KEY

A read on capability, not comfort, before scaling.

AQ® measures adaptability, the capacity to navigate change, complexity and uncertainty, across three dimensions: Ability, Character and Environment. Unlike engagement surveys or personality tests, AQ® measures what people can do when the ground shifts, not how they feel or who they are. For this commercial team, that distinction mattered: the profile showed a group strong at optimising what already worked but under-equipped for transformation, with Mindset, Resilience and Unlearning low in Ability and a low-scoring Environment around them. That gave leadership a specific development focus ahead of the expansion rather than a general call to be more agile.

Mindset, Resilience and Unlearning identified as the team's development focus
R
RESULTS
  • Leaders connected their individual adaptability profiles to team strategy for the first time, with many describing it as the first data that made sense of how they experienced change.
  • The team left with a shared language for adaptability and a clear development focus: resilience, unlearning, and a more supportive operating environment.
  • High-adaptability individuals were identified as change champions to model new sales behaviours ahead of the expansion.
  • The engagement earned a 10/10 NPS and a 7/7 rating for clarity of the AQ® debrief, with a three-to-six-month re-assessment proposed to track progress.

The first time we saw data that made sense of how we feel during change.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about this engagement

Who was the client and what was the engagement?

A convention and business-events centre in Malaysia preparing for a major capacity expansion. Its ten-person Sales, Business Development and Marketing leadership team completed the AQme® adaptability assessment, followed by a two-day programme and one-to-one coaching delivered by AQai® Certified Partner Jonathan Low.

Why assess adaptability before a capacity expansion?

Because expansion changes what the commercial team is being asked to do. Leadership wanted evidence on whether the team had the adaptability, agility and cohesion to carry the business through growth, rather than scaling ambitions on capabilities built for a smaller, slower market.

What did the AQ® data reveal about the team?

That the team was stronger at optimising existing workflows than at transforming for growth. Lower scores in AQ® Abilities including Mindset, Resilience and Unlearning, combined with low AQ® Environment scores, indicated the team was not ready for the changes ahead.

What changed as a result?

The team left with a shared language for adaptability and a clear development focus on resilience, unlearning and a more supportive operating environment. High-adaptability individuals were named as change champions to model new sales behaviours, learning sprints were designed, and sales rituals were redesigned around the expansion strategy.

Who delivered the engagement?

Jonathan Low, an AQai® Certified Partner at Level 2 and founder of Global Success Learning Academy, a leadership and organisational development partner working across keynotes, training, coaching and learning solutions.
